Pairing an EV charger with your solar panels is one of the smartest energy investments you can make. Our smart chargers are configured to prioritise your rooftop solar generation, meaning you charge your vehicle with free electricity whenever the sun is producing. For a typical Burnley household driving 10,000 miles a year, that translates to fuel savings of £1,000 or more annually compared to petrol.

How Solar-Integrated EV Charging Works

A standard EV charger draws electricity from the grid — cheaper than petrol, but still a significant cost at current rates (around 28p/kWh). A solar-integrated charger changes the equation completely.

Smart chargers like the Zappi from Myenergi monitor your solar panel generation in real time. When your panels are producing more electricity than your home needs, the charger automatically diverts that surplus into your vehicle. This means:

  • Free fuel during sunny hours — your car charges from your roof, not the grid
  • Reduced exports — instead of selling surplus at 4–15p/kWh via SEG, you use it at 28p/kWh value
  • Smart scheduling — if solar isn’t available, the charger waits for off-peak grid rates overnight

What Chargers Do We Install?

Zappi (by Myenergi)

The Zappi is the UK’s most popular solar-compatible EV charger, designed specifically for homes with renewable energy:

  • Power: 7kW (single phase) or 22kW (three phase)
  • Solar modes: ECO (solar + grid) and ECO+ (solar only)
  • Compatible: All Type 2 EVs (Tesla, BMW, VW, Hyundai, Kia, etc.)
  • Monitoring: Myenergi app with generation and charging data
  • Price: From £800 installed

Pod Point Solo

A reliable, straightforward smart charger with app control and scheduling:

  • Power: 7kW single phase
  • Smart features: App scheduling, energy tracking, solar-aware charging
  • Compatible: All Type 2 EVs
  • Price: From £800 installed

Ohme Home Pro

An intelligent charger that integrates with smart tariffs for minimum-cost charging:

  • Power: 7kW single phase
  • Smart tariff integration: Automatically charges during cheapest grid periods
  • Solar compatible: Works with solar systems for surplus diversion
  • Price: From £850 installed

How Much Can You Save?

The maths is compelling. A typical UK household drives approximately 10,000 miles per year. Here’s how EV charging costs compare:

Fuel SourceCost per MileAnnual Cost (10,000 miles)
Petrol (£1.40/litre)~16p~£1,600
Grid electricity (28p/kWh)~7p~£700
Solar electricity (free)~0p~£0
Mixed (solar + grid)~3p~£300

With solar panels and a smart charger, most of your charging happens for free during daylight hours. Any overnight charging draws from cheap off-peak grid rates (as low as 7p/kWh on tariffs like Octopus Go), bringing your effective cost to roughly £300 per year — saving over £1,300 compared to petrol.

The Installation Process

What We Check First

Before installing your charger, our NAPIT-registered electrician assesses your electrical supply capacity (main fuse rating), the distance from consumer unit to charger location, cable routing options (internal or external), Wi-Fi signal strength at the charger location, and any requirements for a dedicated circuit.

Installation Day

A typical EV charger installation takes 3–4 hours and includes running a dedicated cable from your consumer unit to the charger, mounting the charger unit on your wall, installing appropriate circuit protection, connecting to your Wi-Fi network, and configuring the app and solar integration settings.

We leave your property clean and tidy, with your charger fully operational and your app configured for optimal solar charging.

Combined Solar + Battery + EV Systems

The ultimate energy setup combines solar panels, battery storage, and an EV charger into one integrated system:

  1. Solar panels generate free electricity during the day
  2. Battery storage captures surplus for evening home use
  3. Smart EV charger diverts excess solar directly to your vehicle
  4. Time-of-use tariff handles any remaining grid charging at the cheapest rates

This combination can reduce your household energy costs and transport fuel costs by 80% or more — and our team designs the entire system as one coordinated package rather than bolting together separate components.

Common Questions About EV Charging

Can I charge my electric vehicle with solar panels?
Yes, and it's one of the best uses for your solar energy. A smart charger like the Zappi can prioritise solar generation, meaning you charge your EV with free electricity from your roof. For a typical household driving 10,000 miles a year, that's around £1,000 in fuel savings annually compared to petrol.
Do I need solar panels to install an EV charger?
No — we install standalone EV chargers too. However, pairing a charger with solar panels (and optionally a battery) maximises your savings by letting you charge with free electricity rather than grid power.
How long does it take to charge an EV at home?
With a 7kW home charger, most EVs charge from 20% to 80% in 4–6 hours — perfect for overnight or daytime solar charging. A 22kW charger is faster but requires a three-phase electricity supply, which most UK homes don't have.
Is the OZEV grant still available?
The OZEV grant (formerly the OLEV grant) for home chargers has been updated. Current eligibility typically requires you to be a flat-owner, renter, or live in a property without dedicated off-street parking. We'll check your eligibility and handle the application if you qualify.
